Funds For Alaska
An urgent request for contributions to the Red Cross Special Disaster Fund is being made for relief of victims of the Alaska earthquake on •Good Friday*. Disaster-caused need is the basis for Red Cross help. While a community marshalls its forces for recovery after a disaster, the Red Cross works with individual families to help them find out what they have left, what their resources are, and what they will need. The family situation may range from complete ability to get back on its feet - with helpful counseling from the experienced Red Cross workers who appraise personal and community resources - to need for total assistance from the Red Cross Why does the Red Cross conduct special fund appeals in time of disaster? Each annual national Red Cross budget includes an appropriation for disaster relief so that the needs of disaster victims can be immediately met. However, experience has shown that the amount budgeted annually may be Inadequate for the job to be done in a single large disaster operation, such as the 1955 Eastern States floods, in which Red Cross spent more than 118,000,000. An organization offering a national program of disaster relief on a yearround basis must consider the unpredictability of d i s a s t e r and must have a means of financing Itself by direct appeals to the public when disaster strikes.
