Rural areas, knows too well how difficult it is to attract the student to voluntary use of the school library. There is excellent evidence, in which I heartily concur, that only in homes where parents provide a sort of reverential atmosphere toward reading from good books, and instruct the very young children in the value of reading, so the children grow up with a true love of books. It is in the home that the basic habits of reading., indeed all habits, are established in the young. Therefore.^ Library Week should be a reminder to parents to help establish, through example and word, good reading habits among the children. During this week a National word of thanks should go out to the thousands of dedicated and generous volunteers who man and assist the profession al staffs of our school and public Libraries over the Country Statistics show that few school and small Libraries could begin to offer the services they do if were mot for these wonderful volunteers. They could be truly dubbed THE KEEPERS OF THE “TOOLS* OF LEARNING. You know something? We have some of those wonderful volunteers right here in Rappahannock.
