Forest Fires Drop

R. M. Johnson, Chief Forest Warden for Rappahannock County reports that three forest fires burned 2 1/4 acres of forest land in the county last year.. For the 16-county Northern Piedmont District, a total of 357 fires burned 934 acres of forest land. This is a substantial decrease over 1963, which was one of the worst years for forest fires in thej history of the Division of Forestry. In 1963, 545 forest fires burned 9,511 acres in the district. Although both years were dry, January and February of 1964 were months when more' snow fell than during the same months in 1963. This provided more moisture in the soil and compacted the leaves on the ground so that moisture would be held for longer periods of
