Edward E. Clark, Jr. (14) of Flint Hill, says he found himself in the shoes of Davy Crockett this weekend when he came face to face with a bear while camping with friends at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park. According to PJddie, he had strayed a short distance from the camp looking for a stray cat that had visited the campsite earlier in the afternoon. He called, “Kitty, Kitty, Kitty” and out of the brush came this rather large and hungry looking bear. “This was my first encounter with a bear,” says Eddie, “and as soon as I realized I couldn’t stare him down, I remembered I had feet and put them to the test." Eddie said the bears were troublesome to most campers during the night and they had to fall asleep to the rhythm of “Run Bear Run” beat out on pots and pans from neighbor scout campers. However, these young braves stayed through the weekend for one of the most exciting camp outs of the yea r.
