A single-car crash early Christmas morning In Rappahannock County claimed the lives of two young Orange County girls when the vehicle in which they were passengers rammed Into the Covington River bridge. Dead were Naomi Jackson, 20, and Sandra Ruth Humes, 18. The accident occurred about 3 a.m. December 25 on U.S. Route 211 between Washington and Sperryville. Four other occupants of the car sustained minor injuries. The six young people were returning home after attending a dance. According to Trooper R, M. Dodson, the 1957 Chevrolet operated by Anderson Carthel Codington of Orange was proceeding west at a high rate of'speed as it rounded a curve and ran off the right of the road. The car skidded diagonally across the highway and struck the cement bridge. It then recrossed the road and came to rest against the bridge on the other side. Two charges of manslaughter and driving without an operator's license have been placed against Covington. Other passengers in the car were Margo Humes, 17, of Madison Mills, Warren William Johnson, 23, and William Howard Glenn, 22, both of Orange. Owner of the vehicle was listed as Eugene Twyman of Orange. He was not with the group. Two Amissville residents were involved in a collision on December 12 on Route 643 a mile and a half north of Amissville. Trooper W. A. Buntin, who investigated the crash, reported that Lilia Mary Jackson operating a 65 Ford ftnd Thomas Edward Rec^ tor driving a 57 Ford met in the .center, of.... rhe .on -a* curve. Neither operator was injured and both were charged with failing to drive to the right of the road. Sustaining injuries in the collision was George Jackson, also of Amissville, a passenger in the Jackson car, who had an injury of the right leg and internal injuries.
