Engine Lubrication
An engine’s life depends on proper engine lubrication, says Easley S. Smith, agricultural engineer at Virginia Tech. Without good lubrication, your automobile engineregardless of type or manufacturer--will be ruined in a very short time. This applies to all engines whether in a
truck, tractor, airplane j or lawn mower. Lubricants clean, reduce friction, aid in distributing heat and cooling engine parts, reduce wear, absorb shocks, help seal around pistons and prevent rust and corrosion. You can be assured of good lubrication by using a nigh quality oil meeting standards specified by the engine manufacturer, using an oil filter and changing it at recommended intervals, and changing oil at recommended intervals.
Once it was felt that the better the oil, the longer it would stay clean, says Smith. This is not true, because most of the better engine oils contain both detergents and dispersants that hold onto dirt and keep dust, soot and carbon in suspension. Oil that looks clean when you drain it is a sure sign that these contaminants are still inside the [engine. Just as water with soap becomes discolored when washing dirty hands, so dc oils with additives become discolored as they clean an engine. Oil that darkens with use is really doing its job. The filter removes solid particles such as dust •breathed in” by the engine, carbon formed by the engine and small metal particles which result from normal engine wear.
