Rockfish Sent To
Front Royal Hatchery
Between 500,000 and one million striped bass eggs were successfully hatched at the .Game Commission’s Brookneal Hatchery May 16, according to Fish Division Chief R.G. Martin. This represents the first large-scale success in three years of effort at the site manned only for a short period each year while spawning stripers are in the Roanoke River. The use of river water instead of city water appeared to be the key to the successful hatch. The city water was highly alkaline and contained traces of chlorine which apparently hardened the eggs. About 1/3 of the rockfish fry were shipped to Pennsylvania in repayment for muskie eggs supplied to Virginia over the past 3 years. Another third of the tiny stripers were shipped to Nebraska in exchange for northern pike fry recently received for stocking in Gaston Reservoir. Some of the rockfish will , be transferred to the Com- i mission’s Front Royal Hatch- , ery for experimental rearing to fingerling size. If this can be accomplished, the finger- , ling stripers may be introjduced into some of the state’s | smaller lakes to see if they [will survive ahd:growiunder such conditions. The remaining fry are to be stocked in tributaries of Smith Mountain and Leesville Reservoirs. Earlier hatching attempts were frustrated by problems ' in water quality and tempera- ■ ture and in securing brood fish. An earlier partial sue- ' cess occurred during the first 1 week in May when a small' number of eggs being transferred to the Front Royal Hatchery hatched on the plane during the flight. Apparently, the oxygen added for shipment and the agitation of the plane flight were responsible.

Leslie Titchenell, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Gayle Titchenell, is at home from Georgetown College, Georgetown, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Conners were dinner guests Sunday of Major and Mrs. Charles Grizzle in F redericksburg. Monday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Conners were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cline and family of Fredericksburg.
