Richmond, Va.Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr., today authorized by proclamation the inclusion of light motorcycles in the state’s official motor vehicle inspection program.
All motorcycles must be inspected by January 1, 1967, and at least every six months subsequently. They will be required to undergo exactly the same Inspection procedure accorded automobiles, as far as it can possibly apply. At the same time, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superin tenant of State Police, who adnmhisters the program, stated that in the past motorcycles of no more than 5 horse power were not required to undergo inspection as there were so few of them'that almost no problem was present ed. Now, he added, January 1 will see at least 20,000 motorcycle registrations in Virginia. As an example of the mounting problem. Colonel Woodson noted that fatal crashes involving this type of vehicle leapt from 14 in 1964 to 19 in 1965 and those involving personal injury from 414 to 859. With two exceptions, inspections will include any ve hide licensed as a motorcycle These exceptions are fourwheeled vehicles weighing less than 500 pounds and having less than six horsepower propulsion, as motorized wheel chairs and lawnmowers, and bicycles with motors installed but which.are capable of being propelled by human power. He closed by again reminding owners that they will be in violation of the law if they operate on public streets and highways after January 1 with out official inspection stickers and urged that owners present their vehicles for inspec tion promptly.
