A Plague
Large green grasshoppers, large brown grasshoppers, small light brown grasshoppers are infesting southern and eastern portions of Rappahannock County in numbers of economic importance. O. W. Isakson, Economic Insect Reporting Service at request of County Extension Agent, W. H. Lyne, visited the county last Friday afternoon and found infestation of this insect to be 40-60 per square yard in the Amissville area. This figures to be 193,600 to 290,400 grasshoppers per acre! Lyne says, he doesn’t know the amount a grasshopper can devour in a day but he has seen plants completely stripped of all foliage in the Castleton area where the insect first attracted attention in 1964. Mr. Isakson collected specimens to take to Blacksburg for positive identification as there were kinds included which he had never seen before. Also, Mr. Isakson. expressed belief that it would be a good investment for farmers to spray their fields next spring. Off the cuff he felt Malathion to be the best chemical to use on field crops; Sevin the best In home gardens. Since all Insecticides must be handled with utmost precaution and since this insect has not reached infestations of economic proportions elsewhere in Virginia, positive chemical control recommendations must be worked out and announced later. Sevin at 1.4 pounds per acre is now approved in home Hardens.
