Growers Benefit in
Wheat Program
Wheat growers will remember 1066 as the year the overburdening wheat surplus was finally worked off, H. S. Barks dale, Chairman of the County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) Committee, said today. With the marketing year carryover down to a safe reserve level, wheat growers began to realize better market prices and look forward to increasing production instead oi restricting it to work off the surplus.
He explained that the wheat carryover last July ] was 536 million bushels and is expected to be between 400 and 425 million bushels next July 1. Production from the increased allotment in 1967 should bring the 1968 carryover back up to about 500 million bushels. The Chairman noted that the 1667 allotment for Virginia is 309,4oo acres, about a third larger than the 1600 allotment. This is the State’s share of the national allotment of 68.3 million acres.
The programs helped farmers maintain income while reducing production, 'through continued cooperation ' in the wheat program, farmers can keep supplies, balanced and realize better net farm incomes because they can grow more bushels, expect better market prices and earn domestic marketing certificates.
Rappahannock wool producers are reminded that January 31, 1967 is the deadline to turn in 1966 sales slips for incentive payments on wool and unshorn lambs.
