Johnson Completes
20-Yr. Park Service
James R. Johnson, district > ranger in charge of protection tctivities in the northern secion of Shenandoah National Park, has been recognized for laving completed 20 years of Federal Government service, Superintendent R. Taylor Hostins announced today. A native of Sperryville, Virginia, Johnson was presented the Department of the Interior Length-of-Service Emblem at a ceremony held last week at Park Headquarters in the presence of many of his co-workers. Johnson’s Federal service began as a member of the U. S. Army, in which he served from 1942 until 1945. Following his discharge, he worked seasonally In Shenandoah as a Park Ranger and fire control aid. He entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1948, and in 1953 graduated with a B. S. degree in forestry and wildlito-Conservation. He continued to work as a seasonal Park employee during his college career, and thereafter until 1957 when he transferred to the Food and Drug Administration at Baltimore^ Later that same year, ,he returned to Shenandoah to accept permanent employment as a Park ranger. In 1960 Johnson was promoted to his present position, and later that same year his position was upgraded because of increased rc-sponsibi lities. Johnson, his wife, Stella, and their two sons, Dennis and Jem, reside in the Park Service housing area near Front Royal, Virginia, North Entrance to the Park.
