Pedestrians must look out for themselves in crossing streets. Their very lives depend on it. It’s a grim fact that 8,800 pedestrians were killed in 1965 in the United States, according to the National Safety Council. And, more than half of these fatalities occurred at night. So, pedestrians can’t be too careful. Pedestrians—like motorists--have rights, but safety dictates that these rights be exercised with care Don’t push your pedestrian rights, the American Insurance Association advises. Cross only at corners, and then with caution, especially at dusk when visibility is poor.
