Non collision crashes, involving contact with no other vehicle or a pedestrian, rose from 359 killing 417 to 388 killing 460. colonel Woodson noted here that these almost invariably result from excessive speed. Urban deaths stood at 244, coincidentally the same as the figure for 1965. Rural ones, j however, rose from 818 to 1 852. Deaths of military personnel were up from 45 to 69.' There were 23 motorcycles i involved in fatal crashes, as opposed to 18 in 1965. Virginia saw 756 deaths in 1960, 856 in 1961, 974 in 1962, 989 in 1963 and 1,050 in 1964.
