Social Security Notes
Starting with 1966, workers whose Income Includes tips are beginning to build more social security protection for themselves and their families, according to Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, social security district manager In Winchester. The social security office has a free booklet that explains how tips are to be reported for social security, and how the Income can be credited for disability, survivors, or retirement insurance benefits under social security. Both the social security office and the Internal Revenue Service, Mrs. Daly said, have copies of a special record book that employees with tip income can use to keep track of their tips. The book also includes the forms needed to report tips to employers. Mrs. Daly reminded employers that they don’t have to match their employees’ taxon tips as they do the t a x on wages. The quarterly tax return for employers has been revised to account for tips separately.
Employees with cash tip income - and their employers - who have any questions about the new coverage of tips for social security are urged to inquire at the social security office, Mrs. Daly said. That way they will avoid errors and costly corrections.
