From a lofty perch atop Red Oak Mountain near Woodville a keen eye scans the countryside spread out below like a patchwork quilt. The trained eye is ever alert to detect a wisp of smoke curling from the horizon. For 16 years Norman Grimsley of Castleton has kept a vigil at the fire tower on Red Oak from March l through the middle of May, and again in October and November when the weather is extremely dry. These are the seasons that high winds pipping over dry terrain make* quick fire detection a necessity. Mr. Gr imsley has held this post regular ly for 12 years and was a substitute four years prior to that. He is employed by the Virginia Division of Forestry.
