1736. The construction was done by the men and boys of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the first Administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The elevation of the mountain is 1470 feet and the tower, a small white frame building, is 16 feet tall.
When the tower first went into operation and was manned by Raymond Johnson, now Chief Forest Warden of Rappahannock, it took as long as three hours to report a fire in nearby Castleton by way of country party line telephones. Now all messages are relayed by radio. The triangulation system is used to locate fires once a smoke is detected.
