Academy Applications
Sen. William B. Spong, jr., of Virginia has set May 18 as the deadline for applications to his office by young men interested in appointments to the United States service academies for the entering class of 1963. He said that he intends to nominate one applicant and sev eral alternates to each of the academies, including the U. S. M il i ta r y Academy at West Point, N. Y. , the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point, N. Y. Actual appointments will be announced next spring. All applicants to Sen. Spong’s office are being asked to take an examination to be administered by the U. S. Civil Service Commission on July 11 at 17 different Virginia cities. Examination results will be one of the major factors used in selecting nominees and alternates.
The examination will be given in the following cities: Alexandria, Big Stone Gap, Bristol, Charlottesville, Danville, Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, Newport News, Norfolk, Petersburg, Richmond, Roanoke, S ta u n t on, Winchester and Wytheville. Sen. Spong stated that he had already received more than 100 applications and that he expected many more before the May 18 deadline.
