Store Needed?
One of the arguments advanced for the proposed store is that it would provide a needed service in the county. (See Rappahannock News, Sept. 14) When one considers the consequences of using alcohol, it is hard to understand why more of it is needed in any county. Medical science tells us that alcohol is a depressant narcotic drug. Its use damages the central nervous system and dulls the higher faculties of man which distinguish man from beast. It has very limited food value and in no way improves the health of the user. On the contrary, it causes inferior judgment and performance on the part of the user. This is evidenced by the great number of accidents attributed to or associated with drinking. Why the well known warning, “If you drink, don’t drive; if you drive, don’t drink?"
The fact that the use of alcohol lessens inhibitions and therefore inducescrimihal and immoral acts is well attested. It is also well known that a large percentage of divorces are attributed to the use of alcohol.
Much more could be saidabou the evil effects of using alcohol as a beverage. These facts allow no contradiction. Yet men will condone its use and give consent to sell it to others. Why? I believe that good citizens of Rappahannock County should rise to protest the thoughtless decisions concerning this proposed store in the county seat. When I moved into this area, one of the things I appreciated most was that there was no state store in the county.
