April Wheat Stocks

A release from the Crop Reporting Board, USDA, shows that stocks of all wheat on April 1, 1968 were 19 percent greater than on April 1, 1967 but were more than a third below average. Despite the increase in all wheat stocks, Durum wheat holdings were 3 percent less than a year earlier. The report also shows record soybean stocks at 17 percent more than a yearago. The Statistical R e po rt i n g Service estimates that wheat production in Virginia for 1968 will be around 5,940,000 bushels, despite a bad winter for wheat with February being one of the coldest and driest months in recent years. The Virginia wheat crop estimate would be 13 percent below 1967 production of 6,790, 000 which was 51 percent above 1966 and 35 percent above the 5-year, 1962-66, average. The Virginia wheat ; per acre yield in 1967 was 36 bushels, a record high.
