Unnecessary? Quite the contrary. Astigmatism, reduced field of vision, far and near-sightedness and color blindness are vision defects that countless hunters have without being aware of it.

Each year the VSPB receives many reports of accidents in which hunters - and other persons - are blinded, seriously wounded and even killed because a hunter “mistook man for beast”, or because the hunter shot indiscriminately at anything that moved.

Hunters who wear glasses are also urged to get SAFETY glasses, if they don’t already have them. Impact-resistant lenses protect the eyes against stray pellets, ejecting shells, twigs and other dangers, without reducing visibility. Another danger hunters are warned against is the wearing of sunglasses. Their use can cause reduced vision and make colors difficult to distinguish. Sunglasses should always be removed before driving home at dusk. The Virginia Society for the Prevention of Blindness is an affiliate of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Inc., which was founded in 1908 and is the oldest voluntary health agency nationally engaged in the prevention of blindness through a comprehensive program of community services, public and professional education and research.
