Girl Scout Group
Goes Hiking
For weeks the Girl Scouts had been planning a hike up Mary’s Rock on October 10. Enthusiasm had been worked up pretty high, so we decided to go ahead and climb the mountain even though most of us had awakened that morning to a fog-blanketed day with a fine mist falling. At 10:30 that morning, we grouped at a church parking lot to make sure none was forgotten including one Boy Scout, and left for Panorama about ten minutes later. On the drive over to Panorama, a few girls had doubts about the ‘climbability’ of Mary’s Rock, as it was totally hidden from view by a dense blanket of fog, but one Brownie leader was still very determined to reach the top, so, of course, we began to climb. The group started out headed by Mm. B. G. Titchenell and Mm. Edward Brown. After following a dead-end path or tow, we hit upon the correct path to take us to the “Rock”.
The smaller girls got strung out on the path so the group was constantly pausing to get together again.
Soon we reached the .8 mile marker. Exclamations of unbelief rose from the Boy Scout that we had walked such a distance. (I do believe he was having a pretty good time anyway!)
About a half hour later we reached the top. We were above the fog now, and the sun was shining. We could see for miles and miles towards Luray, but the Brownies couldn’t care less now they could eat their lunches!
After eating, we relaxed before the trip back down the mountain. We finally started towards the bottom. The kids in front were pretty much running down the path, which in most places was very slick and rocky with a few hairpin curves on the downgrade.
One youngster, running down the path, failed to negotiate a curve, ran off a small cliff and rolled down some rock, got up and back onto the path, laughing, so,ye,continued. - ■>.
We got to the bottom with just a few more minor incidents, when we learned that a boy in another party had fallen off the “Rock” and broken his arm. Oh well... I’d say that most of the girls enjoyed the Hike, although it was unanimously agreed that a sunny day might have been nicer.
