The Remount’
One of the most interesting suggestions we have heard recently for development of a new park area — a “tourist attraction,” if you will — concerns what local old timers (and some not-soold-timers) refer to as “The Remount.”
The U.S. Cavalry Remount Station at Front Royal was one of the last bastions of the horse soldier in the United States, and up until the years immediately following World War II played an important part in the life of the Piedmont. Indeed, there are horsemen who maintain that access to find breeding stock at The Remount greatly improved the quality of local horses in general and hunters in particular, making it possible for this sport to grow and prosper. And many a horse lover will still speak with wonder of visiting Front Royal to see the “liberated” Lipizzaners in the waning days of the war.
