“And here 1 am holding the bets,” said one huge man in striped coveralls. He looked at two quarters in the palm of his hand.^ “I’ll still bet Number 27^ will come in so far ahead of Number 41 that it’d take a dollar and a half to send him a postcard.”
“Those hounds won’t stop until they get to Leesburg,” someone suggested.
“Hell! They won’t stop until they get to Savannah. Georgia,” came a reply.
SEVERAL THEORIES were advancecf for the hounds’ behavior — too weak a drag scent, too much wind, they raised a “real” fox.
Clifton Clark said some of the hound handlers waited around until 10 o’clock that night before they could retrieve their animals. The main pack was found on Red Oak Mountain, about five miles from the race course; some more were found on Bessie Bell Mountain, five miles beyond that.
He thinks “they picked up a fox scent by night,” and added: “it’s happened before.”- □
