Who’s paying?
IN THE MAIL this week came Volume 1, Number 2 of a publication called “The 1-66 Question,” printed qn classy, cream-colored paper in two colors.
The publication is published by the Virginia Department of Highways, and while we didn’t have time to check on how many copies were printed at what cost, we frankly resent our tax dollars being spent far this sort of thing. For the publication, despite a resolutely cheqry attempt at “objectivity” (a letter urging support for the Metro system as an alternative to more superhighways is printed), is aimed at promoting a favorite Highway Depart- . ment project, the completion of 1-66 at its northern end.
Some people who live in that part of Virginia feel so strongly about this that they have spent who knows how many dollars of their own money to combat what they think is an unnecessary road project, one which would destroy their community. Is it quite fair that their own tax dollars also be used for a highway propaganda piece? We don’t think so, and we can say this without even entering into the pros or cons of the specific proposal — and even though we have some complaints about the Department’s plans for this end of 1-66.
