Survey of
livestock
Surveys to determine the number of cattle, hogs, sheep, and chickens in each state and the nation were launched November 24, 1972, by the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
T. L. Stuart, Statistician in Charge of the Virginia Crop Reporting Service, said that along with the count of livestock and poultry the acreage seeded to winter wheat for harvest in 1973 also will be surveyed.
Stuart said that nationally more than 70,000 farmers — 650 in Virginia — would be asked to complete mailed questionnaires while others Will be visited by enumerators. These interviewers are specially trained to obtain needed information in a short interview with the farmer. All information, whether gathered in person or through the mails, is kept confidential and only state and national summaries are issued.
Cooperation by those included in the survey sample is very important to the overall success of the crop and livestock estimating program.
