ARRESTS by the State Police clearing the courts during 1972 totalled 248*364, a substantial increase over the 230,793 or 1971, says Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of the Department.
He said that 96.6 percent or 239,908 involved the highway and that 95.1 percent, or 236,201 were for direct traffic offenses. Overall conviction percentage was 92,7.
Colonel Burgess gave as an example of an offense involving the highway, but not a direct traffic offense, intoxicated on or adjacent to a public highway. There were 2,809 arrests for this offense and he credited many of these with preventing pedestrian casualties.
