A “REALISTIC SOLUTION” to the problem of abating pollution of the ' Thornton River from discharge 6f raw sewage at Sperryville has been urged by Dr. R. S. LeGarde, regional health officer for the District which includes Rappahannock County.
Dr. LeGarde’s preference for providing an inexpensive solution which would not include the cost of growth met with the Rappahannock Supervisors’ approval at their meeting last Thursday.
Presently, sewer lines from a number of houses and commercial establishments discharge raw sewage directly into the river. LeGarde told the supervisors he is now conducting a survey of the violators, then deferred to C. F. Johnson Jr. of the County’s Sanitation Authority.
“I called the engineers down at Stafford (Clifford MarthvAssociates) and told them Dr. LeGarde will conduct a sanitary survey of Sperryville. Sorry I missed what the highway man said,” began Johnson. “He didn’t say anything,” said Chairman Newbill Miller.
Earlier in the meeting Resident Highway Engineer D. R. Askew had mumbled through the final secondary road budget, an inaudible formality. Supervisor Pete Luke managed to persuade Askew to return with a presentation on the Highway Department’s plans for Route 211 by Sperryville, since location of the highway would relate to the problem of where to provide a sewage system for the flood plain town.
