WE WOULD LIKE TO CONSIDER the word OVER and some of the ways it can be used. Yesterday a party called from the Metropolitan area, informing me that she was coming out to dinner, bringing a party of either four or six. I asked if she could be more specific, I wanted to prepare enough food but not “overdo” it. As it happened, there were five, whereas I had prepared for six. Well, leftovers are not so bad if it doesn’t happen too often.
Is over-evaluate a good word? Do we some times put more value on some certain object than it is really worth? I’ve heard friends praise a person that I knew was not worthy of such praise. Even I have had things said to me that I did not feel worthy of. Once I told this friend who was overevaluating something I had done (over-enthusing?): “Lady, don’t idolize me, I’ve got clay footsies.” Then I’ve done something that I thought was pretty good and have the boss say: “That does not come up to accepted standards, do it over.” Some can overdo cirticism.
