The depression of paddling over muddied fishing water, over the famous wilderness stretch of the Rappahannock from Kelly’s Ford to Mott’s Landing above Fredericksburg, set in. I could not enjoy slipping along the shaded, wooded banks, because I knew that the river was supposed to be green.
The stretches of riffles, when the water was clear, would look like a western trout stream and a bucktail streamer played broadside in the current would bring a hard hit from a smallmouth bass.
Other canoe paddlers would have despised us. But fly fishing is even more enjoyable than river crusing.
WE LOAFED Friday, climbed up a steep bank to eat lunch in a hot corn field. Once we heard a tractor making hay, and twice we saw farms briefly.
