THE RAPIDAN was green. Robin said, “There.” Then I saw the dark line of clear water against the silty, yellow Rappahannock, where the two rivers converged in a half mile rapids.
We had paddled hard, self-consciously, for two hours, watching for the confluence, hoping for clear fishing . water. The noise of the rapids should have been warning. What we heard as we paddied down among boutdprs and little grassy islands was not a smooth riffle or a sudsy ledge.
