THE OPENING OF SCHOOLS this month increases the need for alert driving. “Motorists, especially those driving through school zones or near bus stops, may need a reminder to watch for students going to and from school. Students naturally tend to congregate in these areas, increasing the need for cautious driving,” ac- * cording to John T. Hanna, director, Highway Safety Division of Virginia.
“Be particularly careful when approaching intersections. They are a dangerous area because of the heavy volume of traffic and pedestrians which meet there,” he said. “Don’tforget, when approaching a stopper! school bus, even from right angles, you must stop.”
Hanna says a national survey showed that 24 per cent of all fatal accidents occur at intersections. “To help reduce this figure, slow down and look, especially for children, before entering an intersection. “Be prepared for a quick stop. An impatient child might try to cross the street quickly by darting in front of traffic.” □
