FESCUE SEEDING—An ever increasing number of local cattlemen are extending their grazing season by stockpiling fescue for winter grazing. If you are interested in knocking a couple of months off of your winter feeding time, there is no time like the present to get started. September is a good month for seeding fescue. The nights are cool and if there is sufficient moisture the seedlings will be well rooted by winter time. Other advantages to fall seeding are: there is far less competition from annual grasses such as Foxtail and crabgrass. Most competitive broadleaf weeds are killed by the first heavy frost.
If it’s a good season all the way through, fescue seeded this fall will be ready to stockpile by next. If you follow all management steps correctly, you should not have to start feeding until after hunting season is over. Seems to me that Chicken Welch, Charles Foster and most of the Flint Hill hunters would fit right in with this program. _
