copter. Col. McNear had five choices as to how to handle this area once the locust posts were cut.
(1) The ailanthus could have been cut down; but ailanthus is a prolific sprouter. Instead of getting rid of one tree, another dozen or so sprouts would develop once the tree is cut.
(2) Each ailanthus could have been girdled or poisoned; but because of the vast number of trees per acre, this would have been a time consuming and costly job. The estimated cost of hand girdling and poisoning each tree would have ran at least $50 per acre.
