THIS WEEKEND will be the time for the best color showing in Shenandoah National Park, according to Superintendent Robert R. Jacobsen. At higher elevations trees are already beginning to shed their leaves, and the best scenes are distant views of the mountainsides.
Best elevation in color in the North District may be seen between Browntown Valley Overlook (Mile 14.9) and Little Devils Stairs (Mile 20.1). There is good color of red and yellow throughout the North District. Color is pronounced in the distant views facing- north from Hughes River Gap, Hemlock Spring, Old Ra£ Overlook, Milam Gap, and South River—all in the Central District.
The hickories and chestnut oaks are fading in yellows. The red of the dogwood, black gum, Virginia creeper, and sumac is good in the South District —also the yellow shades of the locust trees are predominant at Loft Mountain.
FALL COLORS WILL CONTINUE to be good for several more weeks as viewed from the Skyline Drive towards lower mountain slopes and valleys.
