DURING the spring of 1973, 177,000 seedlings were sold in Rappahannock County. This is enough seedlings to plant 221 acres; this is an excellent start towards good conservation measures by putting cutover woodlands and abandoned farmland back into a productive state. However, the majority of these trees were planted on abandoned farm land. Very few trees were planted in cutover lands. Many cutover lands have developed into a very low quality and valued brush land, requiring many years of growth before a forest would develop. If these cutover lands could be replanted, a new forest of young, healthy, thrifty growing trees could be established in a short period of time. The Virginia Division of Forestry is available to assist landowners
