WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, and later while “going with” a college girl in my home town, they would “put on” a play titled: “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The plot seems vague, but the moral, I suppose, was that being earnest was a good quality to develop. Anyway, the hero was a guy named Ernest, -and having that name it was decided that he should become an important person. It was amusing with the college kids. The heroine would forget that she was Ernest and become Ernestine; as far as her voice was concerned.
I want to consider the importance of being YOU, or just being yourself. Have you ever stopped to think that on this planet there is only one you out of 3 1/2 (?) billion people? Look-alikes, yes, but no real you. Even your reflection in the mirror is not you; it is reversed.
When I was a young lad and noticing girls, it was one of the trite sayings of that time to ask them if there were more at home like them. There was a song that went something like this: “Oh, tell me pretty maiden, are there anymore at home like you?” It didn’t take me long to realize that though they might be identical twins or from the same locality, there is a certain quality about people that gives them individuality.
Confucius say: “The superior man is slow in his words and earnest in his conduct.” Each of us is born under certain astrological influences, but though the stars impel, they do not compel, it is up to you to choose your own destiny. When God breathed into us and gave us living souls, they were living souls; not robots or zombies. It is our responsiblity to let our souls progress on this plane. So be earnest, beings with serious intent. Be yourself. But let that self be the best YOU.D
