WHEN THE food stamp program becomes effective, those qualifying will receive stamps from the welfare office. These can be exchanged with merchants for groceries. The stamps are a form of legal tender.
Mrs. Buntin reminded the Supervisors that since stamps are worth money there is danger that they might be stolen. Thus, the quarters provided to administer the program must have adequate security.
She estimated that Rappahannock could be expected to handle around $10,000 worth of food stamps each month. Stamps worth $15,000 are handled each month in Madison county and Rappahannock has a smaller population.
The supervisors strongly opposed the change.
