Charles Cannon wrote that he saw dog tracks in the mud all around the sheep’s bodies, and “I know dogs had done it.” Wrote Tom Lea: “Nothing but a big dog done it...I think she should be paid.” Another letter-writer said the “viciousness of the at- ' tack led Mr. Bruce to think it was a bear...but large dog prints were seen in the mud” all around the dead sheep.
Another letter-writer attested to hearing “vaDS and growls” from the vicinity of the bull pen where the dead sheep were found. “The sound was definitely dog,” said the letter, which added that a “large white dog” was later seen running “toward the ski lodge.”
