SPERRYVILLE businesses which had been ordered to close January 1, because they were dumping sewage directly into the Thornton River, may be granted a reprieve.
It was suggested Wednesday at a Culpeper meeting of the RappahannockRapidan Planning District Commission that Rappahannock County apply through the State Water Control Board to the Environmental Protection Agency for a grant that would enable further study of sewer alternatives.
Such an application would indicate to the State Health Department that Sperryville is actively seeking a solution to the sewage disposal problem and area businesses could be granted a temporary extension on health permits, according to Steve Dice.
Dice was representing Hayes, Seay, Mattem and Mattern, the engineering firm which is under contract to the State Water Control Board and the Division of Planning to plan for sewer systems in the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District.
DR. ROBERT LeGARDE, the Health Department official who had issued the closing warning, was not at the Culpeper meeting, but he had told the Rappahannock Supervisors at their meeting last Thursday essentially the same thing that Dice outlined on Wednesday.
