many purposed on the farm and around the home. Due to its absorbent characteristic, bark can be used for animal bedding, poultry houses, in stockyards and feed lots. After use as bedding for cattle or poultry, the bark can be spread over the fields and plowed into the soil; this adds organic matter which helps to create a good till, also makes an adequate shortage medium for nutrition.
ONE FARMER in Illnois found the bark so useful that he now has a small business of supplying other farmers with bark. He also mixes limestone, bark and manure for composit material and sells it to nurseries and landscapers. '
Bark also makes a good mulch for strawberry, apple orchards, and flower gardens. The mulch reduces weeding, watering, and fertilizing, saves time, money and in many cases, increases the fruit yields.
Bark also is a good soil stabilizer. Hardwood bark is especially good for this, due to its stringy characteristic; it is not easily windblown and will stay in place longer than other materials. Pasture fields with sheet erosion, road banks, new construction, etc. could be stablized with the use of bark.
These are only a few of the many uses for which bark can be applied. At present, much of the bark at the sawmills is wasted. Why not contact these mills and ask about helping them with their bark disposal problem? You might be surprised at the benefits received. Like the Illnois farmer, it may grow into another business enterprise for an energetic and imaninative person. □
