“You can get information about the four review steps by calling, writing, or visiting any social security office,” Mrs. Crumpton said. “The steps must be taken in order, but you don’t have to take all four. Some people may want to stop the review after a reconsideration decision, for example.
“But those who don’t ask for the first review step— reconsideration—have no further appeal rights,” she said.
