GOVERNOR Mills E. Godwin accepted a golden anniversary plaque from Mr. Sidney Weitzman of the United States Forest Service in recognition of “Virginia’s cooperation with the Federal Government in forest resource management.’’ This year is the golden anniversary of legislation in Federal-State cooperation in the prevention and suppression of forest fires, forest tree nursery development, and forestry assistance to private landowners.
According to State Forester W. F. Custard, the Clarke-McNary Act of 1924, which initially provided Federal funds on a matching basis, was “a milestone’’ in the early history of the Virginia Division of Forestry. These early funds combined with increased state appropriations permitted the purchase of essential forest fire fighting tools, the construction of several fire lookout towers, and the expansion of a forest tree nursery.
