ORANGE Supervisor Richard Sanford, who was acting as chairman of the District Commission meeting, thought the issue was too complicated “for us to decide.” The rest of the Commissioners agreed to just send the record of what was said at the meeting on to the Highway Department, instead of answering the questions.
After the meeting, White said that with a regional plan, the Commissioners could have made some kind of a comment to the Highway Department. White felt strongly that with a regional transportation plan the District Commission could recommend alternatives to the Highway Department’s penchant to always build a four-lane highway or an interstate any time a transportation problem exists. In Culpeper, the problem might be better solved by routing traffic on one-way streets, said White. “But I’d need a plan to make such recommendations. ”□
