was organized opposition because a number of people had come to the meeting to protest the new bypass. But the Commissioners said they didn’t have sufficient information to answer the other three questions, so they just sent the record of what was said at the meeting to the Highway Department. The town of Culpeper has not yet joined the Commission.
What the Highway Department plans to do is build a four-lane limited access highway practically right through the western'section of Culpeper. Culpeper Mayor Carpentar thinks the highway is necessary to move traffic from “one end of town to the other.” The main street in Culpeper is overcrowded, he says, and some residential streets are overburdened with truck traffic. The town would have to cut down trees and widen these streets if the bypass wasn’t built, argued the Mayor.
However, State Senator French Slaughter, who said he was representing himself “and some other people,” was opposed to the highway plans. If the bypass .is needed it should be built farther west, outside the town limits, said Slaughter. It might take longer and more money to move the road, he conceded, “but it would be better.”
