Rappahannock’s zoning ordinance was specific enough concerning flood plains and prohibiting construction in those areas. That would serve the requirements of the program as well as a building inspector, who would be enforcing a building code which prohibited construction in the flood plain.
Martin said the flood insurance program would cost the county nothing. But by adopting it, they would make flood insurance available through local agents for people who chose to buy it. The program is subsidized by the federal government, although it’s sold through local insurance agents.

Photo exhibit
A photography exhibit of special interest to local people will be a showing of photographs of Tim Kilby at Washington Country Store from October 11 through October 19.
Kilby of Sperryville, now a teacher in Alexandria, has taken pictures in many foreign countries as well as the United States but he says he still believes Rappahannock scenery is his favorite place. The showing will include a variety of subjects. Space has been provided by the Store as a public service. □
