RAPPAHANNOCK Supervisors have refused, at least for the time being, to assist the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection in the League’s efforts to stop construction of a 500 kv powerline across the county. The Supervisors refused to commit any county funds to help RLEP pay past and future legal costs.
Roger Batchelder, representing RLEP, told the Supervisors the organization is “thousands of dollars in debt” for attorneys’ fees. He asked that the Supervisors, who donated $1,000 to RLEP several years ago, make an additional appropriation. Keeping the powerline out of Rappahannock will benefit all of Rappahannock, not just the northern corner of the county through which the proposed powerline route passes, he said.
Fauquier County recently appropriated an additional $10,000 to fight the powerline, Batchelder said. “Of course we don’t expect anything like that,” he told Rappahannock’s Supervisors.
Fauquier and RLEP lost the first round of the powerline fight when the State Corporation Commission gave Vepco permission to go ahead with its plans last spring. There are two appeals pending, one before the Virginia State Supreme
