The year’s first total lunar eclipse visible to Virginians came on May 24, and lasted for some threeand-one-half hours. “It is not uncommon,” Dr. Knappenberger explained, “to have two total eclipses within six months.”
He noted that naked eye viewing is “completely safe, as contrasted with a solar eclipse,” but suggested optical aids such as binoculars or a small telescope for even better observations. □
