small tree outdoors, cover the spot where it is to be located with a deep mulch of leaves and shrub pruning to keep the ground from freezing. Plant your tree outside immediately after Christmas. If the weather is quite, cold, place a wire enclosure around your tree and fill it with loose, dry leaves.

If you use a conventional tree in a holder, cut the branches off, and put them on your perennial border as mulch, after the holiday season. Or, if you have a fireplace, you can cut the branches into short pieces and have a pleasant crackling fire. The trunk can be cut up for firewood.□
