RAPPAHANNOCK’S Planning Commissioners will seek a trash collector and a commerical landfill operator, or someone who can perform both chores. At their meeting last Wednesday night, December 17, the planners agreed to advertise for a “private landfill operator” who might collect the trash as well as dispose of it.
Supervisor Pete Luke, the representative from the Supervisors to the Planning Commission reminded the planners that the county’s contract with the current trash collector runs out in September. As it is, “we’re at the mercy of the contractor,” Luke said. “They could come in here with an exorbitantly high contract.” Luke said the Supervisors had discussed it and thought they ought to look around for a little competition.
There is some competition for trash collection, Luke said. But there’s a problem with disposing of the trash. The current contractor takes Rappahannock’s trash to the Orange County landfill, Luke noted. The collector’s contract with Rappahannock is written so that the trash becomes his “personal property” once he’s collected it, Luke said. Thus he’s responsible for getting rid of it.
