In the Old Testament period, angels began assuming a different role—they were used to safeguard the majesty of God, according to Crim. Because people did not want to think of God as being involved in mundane human affairs, they began to speak of angels as intermediaries between the supernatural world and the human world.
Crim is the general editor of the 900 page supplement to the “Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible’’ which will be published next fall. Speculation on angels, their existence and importance, has taken the spotlight in recent months with the publication of evangelist Billy Graham’s book which asserts that angels pose a real force in the spiritual world.
